Coenzyme Q10 aids cholesterol managementComparison of nutritional supplements in improving glycolipid metabolism and endocrine function in polycystic ovary syndrome: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.
Relevant findings on coenzyme Q10
We explored the impact of coenzyme Q10 on high cholesterol in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as part of a broader analysis of various nutritional supplements. The study involved a systematic review and network meta-analysis of forty-one randomized controlled trials, including 2,362 patients in total.
Our findings indicated that coenzyme Q10 was notably effective in improving lipid levels, particularly in reducing triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). It outperformed other supplements in these areas, suggesting that it may play a crucial role in managing cholesterol levels for individuals with PCOS.
However, it's important to note that while coenzyme Q10 demonstrated efficacy in lipid metabolism, the study did not show significant benefits for other health markers, like high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) or testosterone levels. This points to a need for more in-depth research to fully understand its potential and effectiveness in relation to individual health outcomes within this patient group.
Overall, our analysis suggests coenzyme Q10 could be a viable option for helping to manage high cholesterol in PCOS patients, although further high-quality studies are essential for confirming these results and understanding the broader implications.

Combined supplements lower cholesterolLow Dose Monacolin K Combined with Coenzyme Q10, Grape Seed, and Olive Leaf Extracts Lowers LDL Cholesterol in Patients with Mild Dyslipidemia: A Multicenter, Randomized Controlled Trial.
Coenzyme Q10's impact unclear
We conducted a study to explore the lipid-lowering effects of a dietary supplement that included coenzyme Q10 as well as other natural extracts. Specifically, we wanted to see how these components could help lower cholesterol levels in individuals with mild hypercholesterolemia. Our study involved 105 participants who had slightly elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, categorized as mild hypercholesterolemia, and were randomly split into different treatment groups for eight weeks.
One group followed lifestyle changes alone, while the others received either a low or high dosage of monacolin K, a component of red yeast rice, alongside coenzyme Q10, grape seed, and olive leaf extracts. Over the treatment period, we found that both doses of monacolin K significantly reduced LDL cholesterol levels—26.46% with the higher dose and 16.77% with the lower dose.
While we saw some positive results relating to cholesterol reduction, the slight benefit attributed specifically to the coenzyme Q10 was not clearly defined, as it was part of a combination treatment. However, importantly, no severe adverse events were reported, suggesting that this supplement approach is safe for mild high cholesterol management. Overall, our findings suggest that lower-dose monacolin K combined with these natural extracts can be a helpful option for those looking to improve their cholesterol levels.

CoQ10 lowers cholesterol levelsEffects of Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation on Lipid Profiles in Adults: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
Highly relevant study on CoQ10
We delved into the effects of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation on cholesterol levels in adults to determine how it can influence lipid profiles. Through a thorough meta-analysis of fifty randomized controlled trials involving nearly 2800 participants, we explored its potential benefits for reducing cholesterol levels effectively.
Our findings indicated that CoQ10 supplementation significantly lowered levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG), while simultaneously increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). This effect was particularly pronounced at a dosage of 400 to 500 mg per day, which was shown to produce the best results in terms of reducing TC.
Overall, the study provided strong evidence that CoQ10 could be a valuable ally in managing high cholesterol, helping to achieve a healthier lipid profile in adults. This research sheds light on a promising dietary supplement that might assist individuals seeking to improve their cholesterol levels effectively.

Coenzyme Q10 benefits cholesterol levelsEffects of treatment with monacolin K, berberine and coenzyme Q10 on lipid metabolism in patients with moderate cardiovascular risk.
Combination treatment studied
We explored the effects of a combination of monacolin K, berberine, and coenzyme Q10 on cholesterol levels in individuals with moderate hypercholesterolemia and cardiovascular risk. This study involved patients divided into two groups: one received the nutraceutical preparation, while the other was given a placebo.
After three months, we observed a notable decrease in LDL cholesterol levels among those who took the nutraceutical, dropping by an impressive 26.1 mg/dL. In contrast, the placebo group showed a slight increase in LDL cholesterol. While non-HDL cholesterol and total cholesterol also decreased in the treatment group, measures like HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipoprotein(a) remained unchanged in both groups.
Importantly, the combination demonstrated good tolerance and a safety profile throughout the study. Therefore, we conclude that coenzyme Q10, as part of this supplement, may be beneficial for lowering cholesterol levels alongside monacolin K and berberine in patients at risk for cardiovascular issues.

Nutraceuticals show promise for childrenBeneficial Effects of a Nutraceutical Combination on Lipid Profiles in Children with Moderate and Severe Hypercholesterolemia.
Lower relevance due to combination
In this study, we explored how a dietary supplement, which includes coenzyme Q10 among other natural ingredients, affects high cholesterol levels in children and adolescents with moderate to severe hypercholesterolemia. The supplement, Armolipid, was given daily to 84 young participants, aiming to see if it could positively impact their cholesterol levels over time.
Our findings revealed that taking Armolipid led to significant decreases in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which is often referred to as "bad" cholesterol. However, it's important to note that we didn't find any changes in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which is the "good" cholesterol, or in other lipid markers such as triglycerides.
Coenzyme Q10 was part of a combination treatment and its specific impact on cholesterol levels was challenging to isolate. While children who had previously used phytosterols saw additional improvements after starting Armolipid, the overall effects of coenzyme Q10 alone remain unclear.
Moving forward, more research involving larger groups of children is necessary to better understand the potential benefits of nutraceuticals like Armolipid in managing cholesterol levels in young people.

My husband has had a consistently high heartbeat. After starting this supplement once daily, his heartbeat is back to normal. It also provides a boost of energy and concentration. I’m thrilled that iHerb stocks the Qunol brand.
My cholesterol medication caused muscle aches, but after adding CoQ10 to my regimen, my achy arms no longer hurt by week two. It works effectively!
Coenzyme Q10 is my top supplement. It noticeably benefits my cardiovascular system, providing strength and energy. It’s been part of my family’s health routine for years, especially after my grandfather's heart attack. After suffering from coronavirus, I noticed improved energy and performance in the gym. This remains my favourite coenzyme.
